Aerotocumen Boasts of New Jobs, Defends Contract

The Tocumen airport expansion project, which includes the addition of a terminal will generate more than 1,000 jobs, according to estimates by Aerotocumen Consortium, the developer of the work.
During a recent press conference, Aerotocumen discussed its winning bid of $68.65 million, nearly $11 million less than the second highest bid for the project.
"The invitation came at a time when it was clear a change in the economic situation and could point to a fall in prices of some items," said Justo Arosemena, general manager Conconcreto International, a member of the Colombian consortium. "We are committed to the price. We will have a reasonable profit."
Fellow competitors for the work have argued, however, that Aerotocumen failed to meet some legal requirements and lacked experience in similar projects.
Arosemena acknowledged that one of the documents submitted by the consortium was missing an official stamp, but refuted the allegation that the company lacks professional experience. "Conconcreto built the second runway of Eldorado [airport] in Bogota and Grupo Odinsa, another consortium member, is expanding an airport in Colombia," he added.
The company must deliver the project in 15 months.
