Border patrol officers investigated for sexual assault
Police in Veraguas are investigating three officers with the National Border Patrol for an alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old.

The teen was attacked at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The attack took place in the residential areas of Santa Elena, in the neighborhood of San Martín de Porres de Santiago.

The officers were assigned to Veraguas as part of an effort to increase security during the holiday season. The attack took place while the three officers were not on duty, police said.

According to the mother of the victim, the teen was returning home from her job as a domestic employee when the officers attacked her and dragged her into a home where they had been drinking. They forced her to take off her clothes and sexually assaulted her, threatening that they would kill her if she told anyone what had happened.

The teen was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine for examination. Veraguas Police Deputy Commissioner Emiro Rivas said that the three officers have been ordered held by the Public Ministry while the case is being investigated. Rivas added that the police will not "hide anything" in conducting its investigation.
