Volunteers sift through sand as they collect trash along shores in Casco Viejo.

Members of the Neighborhood Association and Friends of Casco Antiguo inaugurated the first beach clean-up activity on the shores surrounding the picturesque San Felipe district of the capital between 8:30 a.m. and noon Sunday.

Group leader Alfonso Díaz said the volunteers focused on the so-called Nuns' Beach, which lies opposite the National Theater, and the walkways along Las Bóvedas.

He added that the group hopes to work hand in hand with the district authorities to set an example for other metropolitan neighborhoods. So far, they have launched the area's first recycling plan and have planted trees and restored green spaces to the historic district.

Díaz added that the group seeks to put an end to residents' parking on sidewalks. "We will be very strict, because the sidewalks are not for parking," he said
