Family and friends of the young Aguadulce athletes greeted the team at the airport following their victory over the weekend.
Shouts of joy, hugs and applause broke out upon the arrival of the team that brought pride to Panama by winning the 9th Annual Latin American Youth Baseball Championship over the weekend.
"There, there, there are the champions," chanted friends and relatives of the athletes who had gathered at Tocumen Airport to offer them a warm welcome.
For Panama, represented by 9 and 10-year-old boys from Aguadulce (Coclé), it was its first champion title at this level.
"This title is the result of hard work and sacrifice and we must enjoy it," said Luis González, the team coach, who explained that players trained hard for five months after winning the national tournament in February.
González emphasized that another important component to the team's ultimate victory was its well-organized defense strategy combined with an offensive that wouldn't give up, especially at critical moments.
"There were several games we were losing in the fifth inning, but managed to turn the game around. They encountered that very situation Saturday, where after tying the game, the Panamanian team rallied to triumph over their Mexican rivals with a 5-4 win.
The championship's organizers, which have ties to the U.S. Little League Organization, took place in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
Over the last nine years, Panama has won seven titles in the different Latin American categories.
