PRD Loses Adherents
story La Prensa
The Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), the country's largest political party, not only lost the general elections on May 3. In the last three months, it has lost about 20,000 of its 640,000 members it had during its peak earlier this year.
Political analysts indicate that the decline in membership shows that the average Panamanian's political preferences changed following the elections.
In fact, a recent Unimer poll revealed that 26 percent of Panamanians sympathized with President Martinelli's Cambio Democrático party, while the PRD followed close behind with 23 percent of respondents.
The country's other three parties, the Alliance for Change, Partido Panameñista and Patriotic Union Molirena have also lost adherents, but on a smaller scale, according to figures from the latest report done by the Electoral Tribunal.
